Maersk continues to downsize its fleet after deciding several years ago that it no longer needed to remain the world’s largest shipping company.

Maersk lost its position as the largest container shipping company early last year after more than 25 years to MSC, which is still expanding its fleet at a rapid pace. In the first half of the year, the capacity of the Danish carrier decreased by 88,000 teu, a contraction of 2.1%. This can be deduced from figures from Alphaliner.BLOG

Former CEO Søren Skou scaled back expansion of the fleet a few years ago in anticipation of the development of marine engines that emit less CO2. The group has formulated a target of net zero CO2 emissions by 2040.
