First ship picks up grain in Ukraine since deal expired
CHORNOMORSK
For the first time since the grain deal expired, a cargo ship has reached Ukraine and left the country with grain. The vessel is now on its way to the Bosphorus, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said on Facebook on Tuesday.
This concerns the ship Resilient Africa with 3,000 tons of wheat on board. This ship arrived on Saturday in the port of Chornomorsk (Odesa region), just like the Aroyat. These were the first ships to reach Ukraine via a temporary corridor that Ukraine itself set up due to the expiration of the grain deal. They have to transport a total of 20,000 tons of wheat to Africa and Asia.
A lot of grain was exported from Chornomorsk when the grain deal was still in force. The agreement allowed Ukraine to safely export agricultural products via the Black Sea for almost a year. The agreements have been extended several times, but Russia has refused to cooperate since mid-July out of dissatisfaction with its own exports. Since then, Ukrainian ports have been regularly attacked.
Ukraine announced last month that it would open a “humanitarian corridor” in the Black Sea for ships stuck in Ukrainian ports since the Russian invasion began in February 2022 and to resume exporting grain despite no longer having security guarantees. Earlier, five ships left the port of the city of Odesa.
